Minister Skuodis to visit Jonava District to inspect the work on Rail Baltica

Minister of Transport and Communications Marius Skuodis will be visiting Jonava District this Friday, where he will inspect Rail Baltica project implementation work and assess the progress made. At a meeting initiated by the minister with the heads of AB Lietuvos Geležinkeliai and AB LTG Infra, as well as representatives from Baltic joint venture RB Rail AS and the contracting companies, possibilities for speeding up construction of the European railway line in the section from Kaunas towards the Lithuania–Latvia border will be discussed.

“I have invited the companies responsible for implementation of the project, and I want to make sure that the talk and the projects on paper line up with the work being done on the ground; I also want to believe that the importance of the project and the acceleration of work are of concern to all project participants, from the ministry and Lithuanian Railways to every last contractor,” says the minister.

Implementation of the Rail Baltica project in this section has entered the construction phase – land acquisition for public purposes has been completed, the construction of more than 18 km of access roads for cars alongside the future railway is near finished, and part of the technical designs have been prepared. Lithuania’s goal is to speed up implementation of the project and open the first stretches as soon as possible, so that most of the work needed to lay the European tracks all the way to Panevėžys is done by the end of 2024.

Construction of the railway bed, engineering structures, and access roads for cars in the Šveicarija–Žeimiai and Žeimiai–Šėta stretches is expected to be completed in Jonava District this year, as is construction of the longest railway bridge in the Baltic States across the Neris River.

At the moment, tenders are being held for construction of the bed in the Kaunas–Šveicarija and Šėta–Ramygala stretches as well. The contract for these works is to be signed at the end of this year.

Rail Baltica is the largest railway infrastructure project in the history of the Baltic States, which will build a fully electrified double-track European gauge railway connecting Warsaw, Kaunas, Vilnius, Panevėžys, Riga, Pärnu and Tallinn. The total length of Rail Baltica in the Baltic States is 870 km, with 392 km in Lithuania, 265 km in Latvia and 213 km in Estonia.
